Francois Montagud, a French 3D artist and instructor, crafted an impressive fan remake of DOOM 3 using Unreal Engine 5, showing how it could update the 2004 game. His project, mostly a tech demo for his portfolio, covers a small part of the game, emphasizing its creepy, thrilling vibe.
He made all the 3D models, textures, animations, lighting, and blueprints from scratch, using programs like 3DSMax, ZBrush, Substance Painter, and Designer. The demo takes advantage of Unreal Engine 5’s awesome features, like lively lighting, Niagara effects (for stuff like sparks and blood splashes), and dense particle effects. The visuals are striking, but some animations might feel a bit rough.

The demo includes simple gameplay, like shooting and interacting with enemies, with improved AI for zombies and the well-known Pinky demon. It also has a cutscene featuring the Pinky, adding to its authentic feel. Montagud added hand-made death animations, which people have called “absolutely incredible.” The latest version, made in UE5.5, has an improved shooting system with better visual cues and updated sound design.
To keep it true to the original, Montagud used DOOM 3’s music and sound effects, including some from the Alpha DOOM 3 version, making it feel nostalgic but fresh. This tech demo is seen as one of the top Unreal Engine 5 fan remakes because it’s playable and closely recreates DOOM 3’s gloomy, industrial hallways. Its success has also motivated some of his students at Interactive Art & Design, where he teaches 3D graphics.
One caveat: this demo isn’t a full remake, just covering a small piece of DOOM 3. Sadly, Montagud doesn’t plan to share it publicly because of possible copyright issues, which is common with fan projects.
